Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, (presently OnestiGheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic competition. Bela Karrolyi was the Romanian gymnastics instructor who became Comaneci's coach later on, discovered her at age six. The first time she competed at the national junior championships in 1969 placing 13th and she won the competition in 1970. In her first international competition in 1972, a pre-Olympic junior competition for communist-bloc nations she was awarded three gold medals. In 1973 and 1974 she was overall junior champion. At her first competitive event in senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva of Russia won five gold medals, as well being awarded a silver. She was the first female ever to successfully perform the backwards double salto after dismounting from an unbalanced parallel bar.
